WELCOME TO BRITISH MEDALS

Hello and welcome to British Medals.  This web site has been created as a free online information resource for collectors, medal recipients, people in possession of family medals or indeed anyone who has an interest in British medals.  Most medals featured are, by virtue of their numbers, military awards but the site also covers those awarded to the emergency services, civilians and certain volunteer organizations.  There are also a small number of foreign medals listed that have over the years been issued to British recipients and have received official sanction for wear.  The period covered by this site ranges from the earliest medals produced in the 1790’s to the present day.

You will notice that the site has been broken down into sections which can be found on the left hand side of every page.  This will hopefully help visitors navigate easily to a medal of particular interest. In addition to the medal categories you will find sections offering advice to collectors, links to online medal dealers and other related sites of interest.  Finally there is an online bookstore that has been setup in association with Amazon books for those wishing to further their knowledge of the history behind the medals and advice for those thinking of buying medals on eBay.

While every attempt has been made to make this site comprehensive there are some areas that have been deliberately left out.  This includes the issue of unofficial and/or veteran’s medals which are fast growing in number but since they are unofficial they are not listed on this site.  The value of medals has also been left out because the market is changing so quickly that it would be extremely difficult to keep up to date and there are many other factors affecting the value of individual medals.  If you want to know the approximate value of a medal I strongly suggest purchasing the latest edition of the Medal Year Book which is an absolute must for the collector.  You can also take a look at the web sites of the various medal dealers which will give you an idea of current values.

If you have any questions or queries regarding British medals or about the site in general please feel free to send us an email.  However please note we sometimes receive a large number of messages in a short space of time from around the world and it can take a few days for us to respond.
