ARCTIC MEDAL 1875


Date Instituted: 1876.

Campaign: Arctic Expedition 1875-1876.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the head of Queen Victoria with the inscription 'VICTORIA REGINA' and the date '1876' below. The reverse depicts a sailing ship in an ice field. The swivelling suspender is plain and straight.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Impressed capital letters.

Comments: Awarded to officers and men of HM Ships Alert and Discovery for their part in the Arctic Expedition of 1875-76. Some 170 medals were issued in total.
