ASHANTI MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1901.

Campaign: Gold Coast 1900.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the head of King Edward VII with the inscription 'EDWARDVS VII REX IMPERATOR' while the reverse depicts a lion with the sun rising in the background and the word 'ASHANTI' in the exergue below. The swivelling suspender is plain and straight.

Metal: Silver or bronze.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: 'KUMASSI'.

Ribbon:

Naming: Indented or engraved capital letters.

Comments: This medal was awarded to the defenders of Kumassi and personnel of two columns that marched to relieve the garrison. The medal was predominately issued to native troops since most British troops were fighting the Boers in South Africa.

Silver medals went to combatants and bronze medals to non-combatants.
