Comments: Introduced in 1993 to recognise bravery of individuals
regardless of rank. The first awards were made in 1995 to Corporal
Wayne Mills of the Duke of Wellington's Regiment and Colour Sergeant
Peter Humphreys of the Royal Welch Fusiliers who both displayed
gallantry in action during UN peace keeping missions in Bosnia.
Two more DSC awards were later made to members of the SAS and SBS
in Sierra Leone in 2000 and another 4 have been awarded to unspecified
special forces for operations in Afghanistan in 2001.
This
award has replaced the Conspicuous Gallantry Medal and the Distinguished
Conduct Medal. It has also replaced the Distinguished Service Order
for gallantry which is now only awarded to recognise leadership. |
