Date Instituted: 1953.

Description: The obverse bears the crowned effigy of Queen Elizabeth II in her robes of state while the reverse has the royal monogram and the legend 'QUEEN ELIZABETH II CROWNED 2ND JUNE 1953'.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 32mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: On the morning of Queen Elizabeth's coronation news reached the UK of Edmund Hilary and Sherpa Tenzing's success in reaching the summit of Everest. The expedition was later invited to Buckingham Palace where the Queen presented coronation medals to its members. These medals have 'MOUNT EVEREST EXPEDITION' engraved around the rim.

About 129,000 of these medals were awarded with 37 to the Mount Everest Expedition.
