DELHI DURBAR MEDAL 1911


Date Instituted: 1911.

Description: The obverse bears the two crowned busts of King George V and Queen Mary in robes of state within a floral wreath while the reverse has the following inscriptions written in Persian script: 'Dehli 1911' surrounded by 'The Durbar of George V, Emperor of India, Master of the British Lands'.

Metal: Gold or silver.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Issued un-named but often found privately named.

Comments: About 26,800 medals were awarded to troops who were present at the Durbar celebrations in India to mark the coronation of King George V. However only around a quarter of those present actually received this medal.

Most awards were made in silver but a small number of gold medals were issued to Indian princely rulers and certain high ranking government officials.
