DISTINGUISHED SERVICE CROSS

Date Instituted: 1901.

Description: This award takes the form of a plain cross with rounded edges. The overse has a circular centre within which can be seen the royal cypher of the reigning monarch at the time of award. The reverse is plain and the ribbon is attached via a metal ring.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 43mm wide and 43mm high.

Bars: Bars for subsequent awards were authorised in 1916.

Ribbon:

Naming: Engraved with the name of the recipient and the year of the award on the reverse.

Post-Nominal Letters: DSC.

Comments: Originally called the Conspicuous Service Cross this award was granted to subordinate officers of the Royal Navy who were not eligible for the Distinguished Service Order. The award changed its name to the Distinguished Service Cross in 1941 and became available to all naval officers below the rank of lieutenant commander.

In 1931 Merchant Navy officers became eligible for this award and in 1940 Army and RAF officers serving aboard ships also became eligible. After the 1993 Review of Gallantry Awards eligibility for the DSC became open to all ranks thus replacing the Distinguished Service Medal.
