Comments: Originally called the Conspicuous Service Cross this award
was granted to subordinate officers of the Royal Navy who were not
eligible for the Distinguished Service Order. The award changed
its name to the Distinguished Service Cross in 1941 and became available
to all naval officers below the rank of lieutenant commander.
In
1931 Merchant Navy officers became eligible for this award and in
1940 Army and RAF officers serving aboard ships also became eligible. After the 1993 Review of Gallantry Awards eligibility
for the DSC became open to all ranks thus replacing the Distinguished
Service Medal. |
