DISTINGUISHED SERVICE MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1914.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the head of the reigning monarch while the reverse has the inscription 'FOR DISTINGUISHED SERVICE' within a wreath surmounted by a crown. The suspender is plain and straight.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 36mm.

Bars: Bars authorised for subsequent awards. Bars issued during the First World War were dated on the reverse while those awarded during the Second World War are undated.

Ribbon:

Naming: Impressed capital letters.

Post-Nominal Letters: DSM.

Comments: This medal was awarded to non-commissioned ranks of the Royal Navy and Royal Marines for acts of bravery in face of the enemy. Later eligibility was extended to the Merchant Navy, Army, RAF and WRNS serving onboard ship.

In 1993 this medal was replaced by the Distinguished Service Cross which is open to all ranks.
