GOLDEN JUBILEE MEDAL 1887


Date Instituted: 1887.

Description: The obverse bears the crowned bust of Queen Victoria while the reverse has the inscription 'IN COMMEMORATION OF THE 50TH YEAR OF THE REIGN OF QUEEN VICTORIA 21 JUNE 1887' within a wreath and surmounted with a crown.

Metal: Gold, silver or bronze.

Size: 30mm.

Clasps: '1897'.

Ribbon:

Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: Gold medals were awarded to members of the Royal Family and personal guests. Silver medals went to members of the Royal Household, government ministers, senior officials, certain foreign visitors and naval and army officers involved in the celebrations. Bronze medals went to certain NCOs and other ranks involved in parades of the review at Spithead.

Some 10 years later a similar medal was issued for the Diamond Jubilee. Those who had already received the Golden Jubilee Medal were awarded the '1897' clasp which was sewn to the ribbon.
