MERCANTILE MARINE WAR MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1919.

Campaign: First World War 1914-18.

Description: The obverse bears the head of King George V while the reverse depicts a steamship sailing the rough atlantic with a sinking submarine and a sailing ship in the background. In the exergue below are the words 'FOR WAR SERVICE MERCANTILE MARINE 1914-18'.

Metal: Bronze.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Indented capital letters.

Comments: This medal was awarded by the Board of Trade to members of the Merchant Navy who had undertaken at least one voyage in the danger area.
