MILITARY MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1916.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the head of the reigning monarch while the reverse has the royal cypher and the inscription 'FOR BRAVERY IN THE FIELD' surrounded by a wreath. The suspender is of the ornate scroll type.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 36mm.

Bars: Bars are authorised for subsequent awards.

Ribbon:

Naming: Impressed capital letters.

Post-Nominal Letters: MM.

Comments: Awarded to non-commisioned ranks of the Army, RFC and RND for acts of bravery against the enemy. Some 115,600 MMs were awarded during the First World War with 5796 first bars, 180 second bars and 1 third bar. Another 15,000 were awarded during the Second World War with 177 first bars and 1 second bar. Between the World Wars some 300 MMs were also awarded with 4 first bars while 932 MMs and 8 first bars were awarded after 1947.

After 1993 the Military Medal was replaced with the Military Cross which was opened up to all ranks.
