NAVAL GOOD SHOOTING MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1902.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the head of either King Edward VII or King George V while the reverse has the nude figure of Neptune holding thunderbolts in his hands with the inscription 'VICTORIA CURAM AMAT'. Behind him is the bow of a trireme and the heads of three horses while a trident can be seen beneath Neptune's left arm. The ribbon is attached via a straight type suspender.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 36mm.

Bars: Bars were issued for subsequent awards of this medal bearing the date and name of the ship.

Ribbon:

Naming: Engraved capital letters with the recipient's name, number, rank, ship and calibre of gun.

Comments: Awarded for excellent gunnery performance in the annual fleet competitions between 1903 and 1914. Only 974 medals were awarded with 62 bars by the time the medal was discontinued in 1914.
