NEW FOUNDLAND VOLUNTEER WAR SERVICE MEDAL

Date Instituted: 1981.

Campaign: Second World War 1939-45.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the royal cypher of George VI surmounted by a caribou and surrounded by the inscription 'NEW FOUNDLAND VOLUNTEER SERVICE MEDAL 1939-1945'. The suspender is of the plain and straight non-swivelling type.

Metal: Bronze.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: Newfoundland was not part of the Canadian Confederation until 1949 being a separate British colony. As a result those who volunteered for war service did not qualify for the Canadian Volunteer Service Medal and so this medal was struck in 1981 to fill this gap.
