OMAN AS SUMOOD MEDAL

Date Instituted: 1976.

Campaign: Dhofar War 1962-75.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the symbol of Oman and an arabic inscription. The ribbon is attached via a ring loop.

Metal: Bronze.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: This medal was struck in 1976 in commemoration of the end of the organised resistance in Dhofar, as reported to His Majesty the Sultan on 2nd December 1975.

The medal is best described in English as 'Endurance Medal', but this is not truly descriptive without explanation so it is always referred to as the As Samood Medal in both languages. The original suggestion was that the medal should be a 'Victory Medal' but the Sultan ruled this out and decided that it should recall the long war of endurance, rather than victory.

Qualifying service was thirty days in the period 23rd May 1965 to 2nd December 1975 inclusive.
