Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: The General Service Medal was originally intended to be issued for operations whenever the Sultan thought these warranted a medal. In fact the medal was only in issued for the Dhofar war, which at the end of 1975 involved the equivalent of a division of allied troops. Originally awarded for fourteen consecutive days in Dhofar, or to those wounded by enemy action, the conditions of award were later modified to include those given gallantry awards in the prescribed areas, those who visited for thirty days ( not necessary continuous) and for aircrew who made thirty duty flights to Dhofar.
