OMAN PEACE MEDAL

Date Instituted: 1979.

Campaign: Dhofar War 1962-75.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the symbol of Oman and an arabic inscription while the reverse depicts the dove of peace being held by a pair of hands. The ribbon is attached via a ring loop.

Metal: Bronze.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Issued un-named.

Comments: This medal was struck in about 1979 for award to all members of the Armed Forces and Police, including Ministry of Defence civilians except for those classed as 'domestics', and this is a matter of contention amoung those affected.

The conditions of award are one year's service from 1 July 1976, the day after the cessation of award of the General Service Medal with clasp Dhofar. However the Operational Award, which is worn on the medal ribbon, was given under terms very similar to those for the General Service Medal, and went to anyone killed or injured as a result of enemy action, or given an award for bravery, in the Southern Province from the same date.
