POLAR MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1904.

Campaign: Polar expedtions since 1902.

Description: The obverse of this octagonal medal bears the head of the reigning monarch (Edward VII, George V, George VI or Elizabeth II) while the reverse depicts the Royal Research Ship Discovery with a sledge party in the foreground. The swivelling suspender is of the ornate scroll type.

Metal: Silver or bronze.

Size: 33mm.

Clasps: All silver issues of this medal were fitted with a clasp bearing the details and date of the appropriate expedition.

Ribbon:

Naming: Engraved or impressed capital letters.

Comments: Awarded to those who have taken part in the various polar expeditions from 1902. A total of 880 silver and 245 bronze medals have been issued for Antarctic expeditions and a further 73 for Arctic expeditions. Bronze medals were awarded to personnel of relief ships but early issues carried no clasp having the date of the appropriate expedtion engraved or impressed on the rim along with the recipients details. No bronze medals were awarded for Arctic expeditions.
