ROYAL NAVAL MERITORIOUS SERVICE MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1919.

Description: The obverse of this medal bears the effigy of the reigning monarch while the reverse has the inscription 'FOR MERITORIOUS SERVICE' within a wreath surmounted by a crown. The suspender is of the scroll type with an ornate claw mount.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 36mm.

Bars: Authorised for subsequent awards.

Ribbon:

Naming: Impressed capital letters.

Comments: Awarded to petty officers and ratings of the Royal Navy for acts of gallantry not in the face of the enemy or meritorious service on ship or shore in action with the enemy. In 1928 this medal was replaced by the British Empire Medal for both gallantry and meritorious service but was re-instated in 1977.

Today this medal is awarded to senior petty officers of the Royal Navy and warrant officers and NCOs of the Royal Marines who already hold a long service medal and have completed 27 years service with three good conduct badges.
