ROYAL NAVY LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT MEDAL

Date Instituted: 1831.

Description: The first type of this medal depicted an anchor surmounted by a crown within a wreath on the obverse while the reverse had the recipient's name, rank, ship and length of service surrounded by the words 'FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT'. The ribbon was attached by a metal ring.

The second type introduced in 1848 bears the effigy of the reigning monarch on the obverse while the reverse depicts a three masted man-of-war surrounded by a rope and the words 'FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT'. The original suspender for this second type was wider than normal suspenders at 38mm but in 1874 a narrower more standard suspender was used.

Metal: Silver.

Size: First type 34mm. Second type 36mm.

Bars: Bars were introduced during the reign of George V for additional 15 years service.

Ribbon:

Naming: All issues of the "wide" suspender have engraved naming and this style continued for a short period when the "narrow" suspender came into use. Issues of the "narrow" suspender were engraved from February 1875 to February 1877 when impressed naming was introduced.

Comments: Originally awarded for 21 years service the qualification period was reduced to 10 years in 1874 but later increased to 15 years. Commissioned officers became eligible for this medal in 1981 provided they had completed at least 12 of the 15 years qualification period as a rating.
