Instituted: 1831.
Description: The first type of this medal depicted an anchor surmounted
by a crown within a wreath on the obverse while the reverse had
the recipient's name, rank, ship and length of service surrounded
by the words 'FOR LONG SERVICE AND GOOD CONDUCT'. The ribbon was
attached by a metal ring.
The
second type introduced in 1848 bears the effigy of the reigning
monarch on the obverse while the reverse depicts a three masted
man-of-war surrounded by a rope and the words 'FOR LONG SERVICE
AND GOOD CONDUCT'. The original suspender for this second type was
wider than normal suspenders at 38mm but in 1874 a narrower more
standard suspender was used.
Metal: Silver.
Size: First type 34mm. Second type 36mm.
Bars: Bars were introduced during the reign of George V for additional
15 years service.

Naming: All issues of the "wide" suspender have engraved naming and this style continued for a short period when the "narrow" suspender came into use. Issues of the "narrow" suspender were engraved from February 1875 to February 1877 when impressed naming was introduced.
Comments: Originally awarded for 21 years service the qualification
period was reduced to 10 years in 1874 but later increased to 15
years. Commissioned officers became eligible for this medal in 1981
provided they had completed at least 12 of the 15 years qualification
period as a rating.
