YOU ARE IN: CAMPAIGN MEDALS 1914-1918 > SILVER WAR BADGE

SILVER WAR BADGE

Date Instituted: 1916.

Campaign: First World War 1914-18.

Description: Round buttonhole badge bearing the 'GRI' royal cypher surmounted by a crown with the inscription 'FOR KING AND EMPIRE + SERVICES RENDERED +'.

Metal: Silver.

Size: 33mm.

Naming: Issued un-named but each badge was numbered on the reverse.

Comments: Not strictly speaking a medal but nonetheless it was worn by recipients in a similar manner. It was awarded to service personnel who were invalided out of the armed forces and were unable to fight. It is said that this badge was introduced to prevent such men of military age who appeared in public without uniform being harassed by women with white feathers. A similar award called the 'King's Badge for War Service' was awarded during the Second World War.
