SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL


Date Instituted: 1982.

Campaign: Falklands War 1982.

Description: The obverse bears the crowned head of Queen Elizabeth II looking right and the legend ‘ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA FID. DEI.’  The reverse has the coat of arms for the Falklands Islands and the motto ‘DESIRE THE RIGHT’ below and the words ‘SOUTH ATLANTIC MEDAL’ above.  The suspender is straight with a simple ornate mount.

Metal: Cupro-nickel.

Size: 36mm.

Clasps: None authorised for this medal.

Ribbon:

Naming: Impressed capital letters.

Comments: About 20,000 of these medals were awarded for a minimum of 1 day service in the Falkland or South Georgia islands or 30 days in the operational zone including the Ascension island. Those who qualified for the former are allowed to wear a silver rosette on the ribbon.
